Four Advantages of Choosing Composite Decking Over Traditional Wood

Simply put, composite decking is a relatively new type of decking material made up of different compounds, typically wood fiber and recycled plastic. Chemicals are then added to the mixture to strengthen, preserve, and protect the end product. Composite decking can be further categorized into one of two groups – uncapped and capped. Uncapped wood composite has exposed wood components, which make it more susceptible to mold and mildew. Capped wood composite panels, on the other hand, are more resilient to moisture and bacterial/fungal growth as they are sealed in a plastic casing.

Greater Durability

For a deck project to be worth the investment, the materials used must be durable and long-lasting. If you end up using cheap or poorly installed materials, your costs of maintaining and repairing your deck can quickly outweigh its utility. In addition, homeowners often host most events in their deck, which means the decking material used must be able to sustain the weight of people, food, and furniture. Composite decking is constructed with materials that are thoroughly analyzed and carefully chosen for their durability and weather-resistant properties.

Low Maintenance Requirements

Composite decking doesn’t rot or decompose over time, unlike traditional wood. They require minimal upkeep and retain their original glow and aesthetic without having to be regularly re-stained or re-painted. Depending on how often you use the deck, you can get away with just hosing it down or power washing it to remove dirt and debris from the surface.

Eco-Friendly Alternative

Today’s consumers are more conscious about how their choices affect the planet. The same goes for homeowners, who are looking for environmentally-friendly alternatives to construction supplies and materials. Composite deck boards are made with recycled material, which means manufacturers do not have to harvest any trees to produce them. Wood decks, on the other hand, require a good amount of timber to build out.

Splinter-Free

Although brand new wood-based decks likely won’t have any splinters for you to step on, the wood fibers tend to break out over time. An outdoor patio or deck that is made with composite materials does not break out, which means you can walk barefoot without worrying about splinters.

Composite decking panels are the superior choice for building out your home’s outdoor space. They are environmentally safe, require low maintenance, do not lead to any splinter injury, and are more durable than traditional options. At Canes Exterior Transformations, we can help you construct a composite-based deck or patio that meets your specific design and structural needs and budget restrictions.
